Welcome to the FADOQ- Montreal
 Island Region Website

We are pleased to welcome you to this site, intended to provide space for 50-plus individuals to exchange ideas and obtain information.  We have chosen this means of communicating with our members and all 50-plus people because it reflects the image of retired persons living in the 21st century.  Since people who have retired are becoming increasingly interested in new technologies, especially the Internet, we can use this website as a quick, efficient way to communicate with each other.

Current developments in the field of communications are nothing compared to the scientific advances that have taken place over the 20th century. However, the means placed at our disposal to transmit our messages are often conveyed by mechanical or sophisticated electronic methods that have nothing human about them.

The 50-Plus Crossroads wishes to remain conducive to relationships between people from all walks of life who visit our site.  We hope that you will enjoy visiting our site as much as we have enjoyed building it.

Enjoy your visit!

About Us

Our History

Thirty-five years ago, organizations in the Montreal area for retired people and seniors felt the need to create a regional structure.

Therefore, in 1972, the Regional Board was formed. In 1974 it became affiliated with FADOQ (Quebec Federation of Senior Citizens) to allow its members to enjoy the advantages of a provincial association.

In 1983, the Regional Board divided into three regions, Montreal-Bourassa, Montreal-Concordia and Montreal-Lac St. Louis, but merged again in 1992 to form a single Board of Directors.

First known as the “Conseil regional de l’âge d’or du Montréal Métropolitain“ (Metropolitan Montreal Senior Citizens’ Regional Board), the Montreal regional  association adopted the name “FADOQ – Région ile de Montréal” in 1996.

Its name now indicates that this organization covers a territory that corresponds to an administrative region as defined by the Government of Quebec and that it is affiliated with the FADOQ Network, Quebec’s largest association for older persons.

Our Mission

The mission of FADOQ – Montreal Island Region is both recreational and social in nature.

FADOQ – Montreal Island Region is a community organization affiliated with Canada’s largest association for older persons—FADOQ, whose membership, numbering nearly 300,000 throughout Quebec, is divided into sixteen regional associations.

FADOQ – Montreal Island Region’s membership of 50-plus individuals totals 24,000.  Its specific mission is to highlight the positive aspects of aging and improve the quality of life for 50-plus people by offering them activities conducive to their personal growth and development.

FADOQ – Montreal Island Region offers its members a variety of recreational, cultural and athletic activities that provide them with many opportunities to maintain and improve their playing, cognitive, memory, physical, emotional and social skills.  It also helps retired persons obtain access to recreational equipment and activities.

The mission of FADOQ – Montreal Island Region also includes a specifically social aspect—to defend the rights and interests of people aged 50 and over. These individuals comprise a highly diverse group, given the great disparity in their economic, cultural or physical conditions.

Our Objectives

Since its inception, FADOQ – Montreal Island Region’s objective has been to improve the quality of life of older persons as well as to highlight aging.

Plan of Action

For the past few years, FADOQ – Montreal Island Region has designed a plan of action spanning several years to orient its medium-term goals.  The plan of action serves as a reference source for the Regional Board of Directors, affiliated clubs, members and employees alike.

MEMBERSHIP PROFILE

FADOQ – Montreal Island Region has a current membership of 24,000 people aged 50 and over.

Some members belong to affiliated clubs or associations (municipal or parish clubs, retired former employees of certain corporations, sporting associations, etc.) while others have signed up as individuals.

Who belongs to FADOQ – Montreal Island Region?

The FADOQ network united associations for 50-plus people over 35 years ago.  We are all familiar with the local “golden age” clubs that have always formed the base of the FADOQ network and are still very much a part of FADOQ – Montreal Island Region.  However, in addition to these conventional golden age clubs, our membership includes various affiliated seniors’ associations reflecting the specific characteristics of our region.  See below for information about these groups, which, over the past few years, have become part of Montreal’s largest seniors’ association.

Seniors’ Associations Focussing on Specific Activities

These associations include organizations whose missions are clearly oriented towards a specific recreational activity, for example, the “Récréforme” Club, which focuses mainly on physical activity for 50-plus people.  The membership of associations concentrating on this type of activity is usually fairly large because they recruit all over the Island of Montreal (as opposed to clubs reaching out, for example, mainly to older persons living in a specific parish).

Associations for “Retired Former Employees”

The members of these associations all worked for the same company. Retired persons from the same organization (and their spouses) who worked together throughout their professional lives share their leisure time within these associations, and their former careers are what they have in common.  A few examples of such associations are “L’amicale des retraités BNC inc.” and the “Retired Montreal Blue Collar Workers”.

Clubs within Cultural Communities

Membership in certain clubs consists specifically of representatives of various cultural communities on the Island of Montreal.  Due to the traditions and activities within the communities they represent, these clubs are often quite different from other types of clubs, and their integration into regional life poses a great challenge to FADOQ – Montreal Island Region.  Among such affiliated associations are those within the Italian, Haitian and Vietnamese communities.

Individual Regional Members

As some are aware, in Montreal, individuals can join FADOQ without being members of a local group; those purchasing a FADOQ membership card directly at the regional level become “individual regional members”.  There are over 15,000 individual regional members in Montreal and this number continues to increase.  Some of these memberships resulted from visits to our website.

Reflecting its region, the distinguishing characteristic of FADOQ – Montreal Island is its highly diverse membership.

ROSES D’OR PROGRAM

Roses d’or is a program that evaluates private residences offering services for older persons living in Quebec.  It has been established in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Lower St. Lawrence, Central Quebec, North Shore, Eastern Townships, Gaspé-Magdalen Islands, Montreal, Laurentian, Laval, Mauricie, Quebec City, Chaudière-Appalaches and Saguenay - Lac St. Jean – Ungava regions, and we have compiled a directory of recognized residences in each of these regions.

By exploring the various sections of our site listed below, you can learn a little more about this program—unique to Quebec—which evaluates the quality of services offered by private seniors’ residences.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with any comments or questions you may have.
